Tour Details

Arguably most rewarding climb in all Myanmar. Phonyin Razi 4282m is located in the north western Myanmar Himalaya close to India border. Your trek starts with arrival by flight to Putao last town in the far north of the country. From Putao we drive to Upper Shangaung and embark on Last Village trek to Ziadum. The Last Village trek has been nominated by National Geographic “Top 50 treks of lifetime” . On this approach “warm up trek” you will get to discover remote Lisu and Rawang tribe villages, passing through beautiful and lush forests, where groups of gibbons and languors can be often seen and heard. You will get to cross hanging bridges and enjoy panoramic views of snow capped Himalayan mountains. Soon after Ziadum we enter wilderness, the nature is magnificent here. Vegetation zones change from temperate, to misty cloud forests and high altitude bamboo forest to alpine pinewood forest. If lucky we might get close views of primates, deer, foxes and Thakin’s along the way.

What’s it like: This is essentially a camping trek. During the first days we stay in local village houses and sleep dormitory style (it is also possible to sleep in your tent should you prefer. During the climb there are roof covered shelters where we don’t necessarily need to pitch tents. Only on the last night before ascent to the summit it is necessary to sleep in tents. Participants must be fit in order to join this trekking peak expedition. Climbing skills nor climbing gear are not needed. Recommended packing list will be mailed to participants prior to the trip.

After check-in and lunch we take a walk around the town to get a feel of the local life and meet the friendly people. Putao previously known as Fort Hertz by its colonial name was the furthest out post of the British Burma. A number of expeditions and surveys trips were conducted by the British and international explorers to record the unique flora and fauna of the region however large parts remain unexplored. Like many other parts of Burma access to the far north was restricted for decades. Putao remains a sleepy and isolated town situated in a flat valley surrounded by forests and has only seasonal overland access from Myitkyina.
