Tucked away in remote mountain valley, surrounded by dense jungle and some of the last wildernesses of SE Asia is Putao aka Fort Hertz the most remote outpost of the former British Burma. This journey will give you a glimpse of culture and nature of Myanmar Himalaya in comfort. Travel expert guide from tribal community, meet the locals and enjoy leisurely walks and excursions. Cycling is also available for those who are interested in exploring the region by bicycle.

Tour Highlights           

Putao town situates in fertile and flat valley at 457masl nestled by mountains and dense forests. It was built in 1914-15 and named as Fort Hertz. Putao has the northern most airport in Myanmar and is base for trekkers heading to the uninhabited wildernesses and snow-capped mountains bordering China and India. Local population consists of Lisu, Rawang and Jingphaw who are mostly Christian and have written language created by missionaries. 
Kaungmulone – Site of a famous pagoda believed to be built by great King, Thiri Dhamma Thawka.
Machanbaw –
Village located across Malikha River, connected by beautiful suspension bridge.
Mulashidi – Meaning in Lisu “the village stands in the thatch field along Mula River”. Beautifully set up Lisu village 14km south of Putao connected by 159 meters long suspension bridge with scenic remote mountains backdrop.

Itinerary

Day 1Welcome to Putao [-/-/D]

Welcome to Putao! Meet your guide at the airport with your name sign and after immigration formalities short transfer to your lodge. Freshen up and get ready for an introductory guided walk around the town to get a feel of Putao. Putao was first built 100yrs ago and named as Fort Hertz. It was the northern most terminus of the British Burma and where travel through jungle and along river valleys was a long and treacherous journey. Botanists and taxonomists basing themselves in Fort Hertz did extensive study on plants and wildlife and found many new species here.

Day 2Explore Villages around Putao valley (B/L/D)

After breakfast, enjoy a morning walk through lively Putao market where a great variety of fresh produce is on display. Next we drive to Htawadum village (1hr) and visit the revered Kaungmulon Pagoda believed to be built by great king Thiri Dhamma Thawka. After meeting locals and a fisherman who will take us on boat ride on the Malikha river. We sail downstream (1hr) to reach Machanbaw. Machanbaw, is charming little town with some colonial style buildings. After walk around the town we cross a suspension bridge over the river and drive to Mulashidi, (approx 1hr). Mulashidi, means in Lisu language “the village stands in the thatch field along Mula River”. Here we visit another suspension bridge spanning across Mula River and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and backdrop of snow-capped mountains in horizon (when view is clear). We return back to Putao late afternoon. Lunch in a village, Dinner and overnight in Putao.

Day 3Walking tour to Community Villages (B/L/D)

Hearty breakfast and pleasant morning walk to Lonsut village through paddy fields and along Namhtun creek. We hike up to a small plateau for nice view over the Putao valley. Following the trail weaving through beautiful bamboo groves we arrive to Hopaing Shan village for a visit to Buddhist Monastery and to meet the friendly Hkarnti Shan people (one of the minorities). After farewells our trail loops back towards Putao passing by some Lisu villages and scenic Putaung village circled by paddy fields and with a view to remote Himalayan mountains. We will arrive back to your lodge in the afternoon and take a rest.

Day 4Departure

Putao mountains.

Breakfast and perhaps a last minute shopping at Putao market. Depending on your departure time your guide might be able to arrange some additional activity this morning. After an early lunch, we transfer to airport for our onward departure flight to conclude this unique experience.
