This snow capped mountain is totally of the beaten track. Very few locals who live in remote villages have been on the slopes here. One of our senior local guides from Putao had previously made the trek half way prior to our attempt. Our team consisted of local guides and myself from Discovery Dmc adventures department. I was very fortunate to join this adventure.
On our first day we drove 1hr out of townwith motorbikes to the last village (Nam ta ku), starting point of our trek. During the 12 days trekking expedition we walked 7 to 8 hours a day through challenging terrain.
It took 7 days to reach our advanced base camp to push for the summit of Mt. Mehi Phi Phi and 4 days to make our way back to Putao. The trek was gradual climb up to high mountain ridges and finally to the summit. The first challenge was crossing a freezing cold small river which had pretty strong current. Fortunately the water level was pretty low and we didn’t need to rope up. During normal season the water level should be below knee and during rainy season the water level goes so high that it is very difficult and dangerous to pass.
We had opportunity to stay in villages on two days which was very nice after long and challenging walking days. We spend our day at the village (Nam Zay) by chilling at our village house in the morning, afternoon fishing on the river and visiting village family houses. The village population is around 100 people. All people here are Lisu minority who are christians. They are very kind and hospitable and clearly had not received visitors before.
We reached the snowline at 2900m altitude and pitched our advanced base camp at 3350m below the summit. The abc had fresh snow and we were getting more snow all day. While we were cooking our senior guide went to check the trail and access route to the summit and safety for the next day climb. At the crack of the dawn we started climb up to the summit and got to 3850m after 2,5hrs climb. In front of us lie 4000m high border ridge to India but due to bad visibility, increasing wind and snow fall we decided to turn back and abort the mission.
This was my first experience for trekking up to snow capped mountains and did it without any training. The trek was challenging as it was mostly uphill yet very beautiful and interesting. I recommend this trek to people who are fit and up for real off the beaten trails wild trek to unknown lands.
This region in Myanmar Himalay is truly a hidden gem and real wilderness where there are hardly any villages nor trails.
