Mount Victoria and Chin State Trek

The Mt Victoria and Chin State trek is a great combination of cultural exploration, ethnic encounters and adventure trekking in the remote southern Chin State and Mt Victoria (Natma Taung) National Park.

Your tour begins in Mandalay where you have the opportunity to explore the last royal capital of Burma and to experience the life of this vibrant second biggest city of Myanmar. Next travel south bound to discover the amazing temples of Bagan situated by the Irrawaddy River.

Next drive to hilly Chin State and Mindat where you will trek to tribal communities of ethnic Chin peoples. The villages are built on green slopes and connected by small mountain trails. During the trek your guide and support team will take care of arranging accommodation in local houses and lodges, prepare tasty meals and transport your luggage. You will have plenty of time to mingle with the locals, to learn about Chin culture and traditions and do photography and bird watching.

The pinnacle of the tour is the climb to the summit of Mt Victoria 3180m. This is gradual ascent and not technical climb. The summit can be also reached by jeep. From Chin State you will journey to Yangon the thriving economic heart of the country where you will encounter a mix of new Myanmar, signs of colonial past and a get a real feel of nation in transition.

Meet your guide at Mandalay airport and transfer to your hotel for check-in. Afternoon tour to explore some of the highlights of Mandalay. Visit the Golden Palace Monastery the sole surviving palace building of Mandalay dynasty and the Mahamuni buddha layered in tons of leaf gold. Time permitting and should you wish you can visit the Jade Market. This market is like its own little city with everything circling around Jade. End the day with a sunset from Mandalay Hill.

The Temples of Bagan(Pagan), Mandalay, Myanmar


Transfer to Mandalay airport and morning flight to Bagan.
Bagan valley is dotted with literally thousands of temples. Today you will explore some of the most impressive and famous sights of Bagan. The gold gilded Shwezigon stupa, purported to contain a holy tooth relic of the Buddha; the Myingaba Gu Byaukgyi temple housing Bagan’s best preserved mural paintings; the beautifully symmetric and majestic Ananda temple with its four standing Buddha images that seem to gaze at the viewer with fixed serenity wherever the viewer stands. We end the day with a sunset horse cart ride around the temples of one of the richest archaeological treasures in Southeast Asia.

Today embark on a tour in Bagan with mountain bikes exploring hidden trails and tracks to some of the more remote temple sites & villages. Meet the locals in friendly villages and learn more about life in Bagan.
The afternoon is free for relaxing by your hotel pool or exploring Bagan independently

After breakfast drive to Mindat (4-5hrs) first crossing the Ayeyarwaddy River over a newly constructed bridge and then continuing to Pauk, Kyatko and finally climbing up to Chin Mountains and Mindat town at elevation of 1600 meters. The road travels through sparsely populated, arid and mostly flat terrain. The nature gets greener as you  approach and ascend up mountain range to Mindat. Mindat is a sleepy hillside town with a cluster of shops along the main street and twenty some churches.

Chin state trekking


Morning visit to Mindat main market where Chin ladies trade their farm produce and handicrafts. After some tea and snack in a local tea shop continue to a weaving center and a little museum showcasing Chin items. Next drive to a suspension bridge at the bottom of a valley starting point of your trek. The trekking route traverses along the valley to Loat Pe village and eventually ascends to Kyardo Chin village where you will spend the night. Kyardo is a charming and isolated little village without road access and one of the most authentic villages in the Chin Hills region. You will have ample time to explore the village and meet the locals and learn about their traditions and beliefs. If possible we will arrange cultural show and dances this evening.

Chin State village


This morning you trek through corn, avocado, bean and tea plantations and ascend to a seasonal mountain road. Following the road for a good hour or so we enjoy hiking on easy and flat terrain traversing along the Mindat range and enjoying great views down to lower lying plains. En-route we pass through some friendly Chin villages where very few travelers have visited and for the villagers seeing foreigners is always exciting. Lunch is in Aimhmuin village. In the afternoon continue ascending to Aye village following a short cut path and a forest road. Spend tonight in a simple Aye village lodge which is an old British camping ground. The Lodge is very simple but has hot shower and rustic rooms with mattresses.

From Aye village head towards Nat Ma Taung (Mount Victoria). The trail leads to the Nat Ma Taung National Park traveling through rhododendron and pine forests. Here you will see mithun, the semi wild cattle of the Chin grazing around the small villages that we pass. We have an early lunch in Htan Om village. This afternoon there are several stream crossings and the trail may be muddy at times. After stream crossings we start to head uphill on a steeper path until reaching more moderate terrain and farm lands which take us to Do Nuu  village at 1850m. Do Nuu is charming village located on a ridge over beautiful valley.

This the summit day and entails the most challenging hiking. The day begins on a relatively easy trail that slowly gains altitude, and offers unobstructed views over the lower lying vegetable fields. We soon enter evergreen and rhododendron forests littered with lichen and moss and where many rare plants species, orchids and bird species can be found. We pass Mt Christian as we approach Nat Ma Taung (Mt Victoria) peak far on the horizon. The last part of the trek to the summit follows a wider track that contours along the ridges of the mountain leading to the broad summit at 3180m. Here we can see excellent views over the surrounding region and its lush nature. After celebratory photographs we trek one and a half hours down to a mountain road where our driver will be waiting for us and we drive to our lodge near Kanpetlet town.

In the morning we have some time to explore Kanpetlet and adore the views over plains of Magwe Region. We van visit local market for last interactions with locals before we start our five hour drive back to Bagan. En route we will travel through the regional hubs of Saw Seikphya before crossing the Ayeyarwaddy River to Chauk. Chauk is an oil producing town with over 100yrs of extraction history. We will reach Bagan late afternoon for your 5pm flight to Yangon.

In Yangon you will be picked up by Discovery DMC driver and escorted to you hotel for check in. Rest of the evening is for relaxing.
